I had a few extra minutes before work this morning and took some measurement off of a my Taylor D710.
It seems that Taylor's neck angle is done on the body side and not on the neck side. The neck angle is 90 degrees to the fingerboard and the top of the body is 1.5 degrees to the neck.
Does anyone else do it this way or do you do it on the neck side???

Thanks Gary

Do you mean the heel is 90 degrees to the finger board? If yours is the current design, then yes. The heel is actually recessed into the heel block, although you can't tell this because of their close tolerances. It looks like it is a butt joint. The neck angle is set by shims between the neck and the heel block. The neck also runs almost to the end of the fingerboard with a corresponding block in the body.

If your interested in more details, you can order a free video on the subject from taylor.

This is an older Taylor before the newer neck system.
I got the video from them a few years ago. I beleive the taylor I have is a 97 model.

no, taylor adjusted the heel of the neck to achieve the angle they wanted, and repeatedly cited the ease of this operation as one of the advantages of the bolt on neck both in manufacturing and if a reset was ever necessary..crazymanmichael38473.5962731481

Oh... so on this guitar the body was off 1.5 degrees so they cut the heal at 0 degrees to get the 1.5 degree neck angle?
Sound right?

what is your definition of how and have you determined that the body is "off"?

i don't see your point.

The only thing I was trying to figure out was where they got the 1.5 degree neck angle.
I try and make my bodies wthi the neck block square to the top and make the heal 1.5 degrees down.
All I was saying is it looked to me like they put the body at 1.5 degrees and the heal at 90 to the fingerboard.

i still don't see how you have made this determination. is it just a sujective visual impression you have or is it something objectively arrived at?

they got the neck angle in those days by machining the heel to be at the desired angle to the fingerboard gluing surface, thus when the neck butted up to the body it gave the appropriate angle. if it had to be adjusted at the time of assembly they did so, though using the cnc machining they have i'm told that was a relatively infrequent need.

I was just trying to see how a major company did the angle. With a straight edge across the top of the frets to the bridge it was just touching the bridge in the middle and the hi and lo sides.
Then I took a bevel square and checked the neckblock to the top of the body and found it to be 1.5 degrees off of square.
So I checked the neck by measuring with the bevel again from the glue joint between the fingerboard and the neck to the angle of the heal and found it to be square.

So all I was wondering was did they set the body at 1.5 degrees and the heal at 0 to get their neck angle.
I figured with all the cnc stuff and jigs they have that everything comes out the same.

But this was all done before coffee too..
